Walvis Bay and Sandwich Harbor describe the Namibian coast in two different ways. Walvis Bay is a port city overlooking an important lagoon for avifauna; Sandwich Harbour is a remote area of Namib-Naukluft National Park, where dunes and Atlantic meet.
The two experiences can be combined, but access to Sandwich Harbour depends on rules of the protected area, applicable permits, tides, sand, weather conditions and operator evaluation. It's not a stop to improvise.
Walvis Bay and Swakopmund are not the same stop
- Swakopmund: tourist base, restaurants, historic center and desert activities.
- Walvis Bay: lagoon, port, marine activities and departures for 4x4 excursions.
Many travelers sleep at Swakopmund and reach Walvis Bay for the day's activity. It is practical when departure times are compatible.
What to do in Walvis Bay
Lagoon and birdlife
Flamingos and other aquatic birds can be observed along the lagoon, but presence and location change with season, tide and conditions. A naturalistic guide helps to read the environment and maintain correct distance.
Kayaking
Kayaking excursions offer a silent experience of the marine environment. They require suitable clothing and willingness to accept wind, cold water and sprays. Operation and requirements are established by the operator.
Cruises
Boat outputs vary for duration, group size and setting. Before booking it is useful to check safety standards and behaviour of the operator towards the fauna.
Sandwich Harbor: Access and Responsibility
Sandwich Harbour is located within the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Access should not be treated as a normal self-drive deviation. Travel routes, timetables and routes can change according to tide, sand, restrictions and operational decisions.
Redland recommends that you use a specific operator, appropriate means, recovery procedures and permissions required for the service performed. The “authorized operator” formula must be verified on the credentials and permits actually applicable on the date of the excursion, not presumed by the promotional material.
When access to the beach is not safe or allowed, the route can be adapted. This is not necessarily a faulty service: it is a decision linked to security and protection of the area.
Institutional source to check again before the activity: Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism. Permissions, accesses and operating conditions must be confirmed with the selected supplier.
Half day or full day?
- Half day: suitable for a single activity.
- Full day: more balanced to combine sea and desert.
- Two days: useful for separating marine fauna and 4x4 tours, maintaining margin for weather and tiredness.
What to bring
- windproof jacket and warm layers;
- sunscreen, glasses and hat;
- water according to the operator's instructions;
- protection for camera and phone from sand and splashes;
- comfortable shoes and clothing that can get wet.
Wildlife and responsible behavior
Flamingos, otaries, dolphins and other species should not be chased, touched or drawn to obtain photographs. A responsible operator maintains adequate distances and changes the activity according to the behaviour of animals.
Consult how to photograph people and animals in Namibia and the in-depth analysis on responsible tourism.
How to include them in the itinerary
Walvis Bay and Sandwich Harbor are normally integrated during a two or three night stop on the coast:
- arrival and overnight stay in Swakopmund or Walvis Bay;
- day dedicated to coastal activities;
- departure towards Spitzkoppe, Skeleton Coast or Damaraland.
Those arriving from Sossusvlei face a long day. Booking an important tour on the same afternoon reduces your operating margin.
Mistakes to avoid
- Tackling Sandwich Harbor without preparation and proper operator.
- Base your day on a tide time found online without local confirmation.
- Book consecutive activities without margin.
- Dress as if for a tropical beach.
- Present wildlife as a guaranteed sighting.
Frequently asked questions
Can you go to Sandwich Harbor in your own 4x4?
Redland does not recommend it for most travellers. Rules, sand, tide and procedures require specific competence and updated access verification.
Are sightings guaranteed?
No. Animals are free and conditions change.
Is cruising or kayaking better?
The kayak is more active and collected; the cruise is generally more accessible and covers a larger area. The choice depends on mobility, climate and interest.
Organize the coast
Redland selects activities according to the route, group and conditions communicated by the supplier. The service can be entered in a tailor-made trip or in a organized tour.
Access, permits, operational itinerary and cancellation conditions must be reconfirmed for the actual date of travel.
