Waterberg Plateau: safari, trekking and itinerary

Waterberg invites you to choose what to look for: path, landscape, conservation or memory of the place. Read the possibilities by distinguishing activities and accesses, then evaluate how to insert it without adding a stage for inertia.

  • I walk
  • Conservation
  • Role of the stage

Updated July 15, 2026.

The Waterberg Plateau is a stage of landscape, walking, conservation and historical memory. The sandstone wall emerges from the savannah of the Namibian centre and creates a greener and more vertical environment than Etosha, the desert and the coast.

It can work as an introduction to travel, break after Etosha or stage dedicated to walking. Waterberg is linked to the battle of August 1904 and the subsequent persecution of OvaHerero during the genocide committed under the German colonial rule against OvaHerero and Nama between 1904 and 1908.

Where is it located and what role can it have?

The plateau is located north of Windhoek and south-east of Etosha. It can be entered:

  • at the beginning of the journey, before Etosha;
  • at the end of the northern circuit, during the return to Windhoek;
  • as a two-night stop on naturalistic, historical or slower itineraries.

It is not a replacement for Etosha: landscape, vegetation and ways of observing fauna are different.

What to do at the Waterberg

Walk at the foot of the plateau

The paths cross vegetation, rocky walls and panoramic points. Some paths can be accessed independently, while others require accompaniment or permission. Availability and rules must be checked locally.

Heat and altitude difference matter more than the indicated distance. Morning hours are generally more suitable and sufficient water is needed.

Guided treks

Accompanying excursions allow you to read geology, vegetation and traces, as well as manage access and security. Not all routes are available every day or throughout the year.

Safari and conservation

Waterberg is associated with conservation projects and houses several species. The activities depend on the structure and the protected area chosen.

The sightings should not be compared mechanically with Etosha. The vegetation is more dense and the experience can be interesting even without a long list of species.

Waterberg and the genocide of the OvaHerero and Nama

In August 1904 the area was the scene of the Battle of Waterberg between the German colonial forces and the OvaHerero. After the confrontation, many OvaHerero were forced to the Omaheke desert, while colonial violence continued with expulsions, death by hunger and thirst, concentration camps and persecution against the Nama people.

These events are part of the OvaHerero and Nama genocide of 1904-1908, recognized by Germany in 2021. Memory is still subject to political discussion, demands for repair and work of the descendants. The place must therefore be told with precision and respect, without reducing it to a historical curiosity.

How many nights to stop

  • One night: useful as a stopover, with limited time for activities.
  • Two nights: more balanced solution for walking, historical visits and naturalistic activities.
  • Three nights: suitable for trekking or a specific program.

Accommodation

The accommodation includes facilities close to the protected area, private lodges and guest farms. The choice affects the truly accessible activities.

  • In or near the area: practical for trails and morning starts.
  • Private Lodge: can offer its own activities and greater comfort.
  • Guest farms: simple and convivial formula, to be evaluated based on distance.

Before booking you need to check which activities are operated by the structure and which require travel. Consult how to choose lodges in Namibia.

Who is it suitable for?

  • travelers interested in walking in addition to safaris;
  • those looking for a green and quiet stop;
  • families, with age-appropriate activities;
  • travelers interested in colonial history and memory;
  • who wants to break the journey between Windhoek and Etosha.

It is less suitable for a very short itinerary already focused on desert, coast, Damaraland and Etosha.

Climate and equipment

They serve suitable shoes, hat, sun protection, water and a warm layer for fresh hours. During the rainy season accesses and paths can change.

How to include it in the itinerary

At the beginning

Windhoek → Waterberg → Etosha allows gradual entry into the country.

In the end

Etosha → Waterberg → Windhoek can split the return journey, as long as the flight time and distance from the airport are compatible.

In a thematic itinerary

It can be connected to Otjiwarongo, private reserves or paths dedicated to conservation and history. It should not be inserted only because it seems “on the road”.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Expect a smaller Etosha.
  • Book a facility far from the planned activities.
  • Underestimate heat and height differences.
  • Treat the history of the place superficially.
  • Add it to an already overfilled itinerary.

Decide whether to include it

When designing a tailor-made trip, Redland evaluates Waterberg according to days, flight, lodge position and real interests. The stage must improve the journey and the story of the territory.
