SOUTH / THE DESERT ROOMS
Kolmanskop.
Sand slips through the doorway, climbs the stairs and settles in the living room. At Kolmanskop, the desert inhabits the rooms people left behind.
Plan your tripWorth knowing.
Kolmanskop, also known as Kolmanskuppe, is a former mining settlement near Lüderitz. The diamond rush of 1908 brought buildings and services into the desert; after the town was abandoned, the sand began reclaiming them. Today, you can visit with a permit.
How to experience it.
Stay in Lüderitz for an easier morning visit. Combine the historical tour with time to explore the accessible interiors: light and wind change the character of the rooms. Visits outside normal opening hours require the appropriate permit from the operator; check and purchase it in advance.

In the field.
The empty rooms draw the camera. The history of labour, diamonds and power deserves just as much attention.

The first name to remember
In 1908, Zacharias Lewala found the diamond that helped start the area's mining rush. The story often moves directly to elegant houses: remembering who found the stone also helps to understand the work and inequalities of the colonial context.

Sand is a patient tenant
Aligned doorways, weathered plaster and dunes inside the rooms make the passage of time visible. Follow the on-site instructions: an open door does not mean an area is safe or open to visitors. Leave objects in place when composing your photographs.

The right light takes planning
The operator provides separate arrangements for normal visits and access with a special pass. A standard ticket does not guarantee admission at dawn. Confirm your permit, opening hours and visit arrangements: good photography starts with good planning.

A rewarding visit starts with the practical details.
- When to go
- Visits are possible in different seasons. Wind and sand are part of the setting; mornings are a practical choice for light and planning, though conditions vary.
- How long to allow
- Set aside a few hours for exploring and photography. A guided tour or audio guide provides context before you explore the areas open to visitors.
- How to get there
- Lüderitz is the closest base; Kolmanskop lies inland on the road towards Aus. If you are coming from Aus, allow for a substantial drive and an early start.
- Permits and opening hours
- Buy your permit through the channels listed by the site operator. It covers Kolmanskop only, not unrestricted access to the surrounding area. Check the separate arrangements for photography outside normal opening hours.
- What to bring
- Bring closed-toe shoes, water, sunscreen and a windproof jacket. Protect your camera from sand and change lenses in a sheltered spot.
- Nearby places to explore
- Lüderitz and its peninsula complete the stop. Aus can be an earlier or later stage; Fish River Canyon requires a distinct and well-planned travel day.
