CENTRAL PLATEAU / YOUR FIRST ENCOUNTER
Windhoek.
Before the miles, the people. Windhoek is where Namibia stops being a place on a map and starts becoming your journey.
Plan your tripWorth knowing.
Windhoek lies on the central plateau. The centre, residential neighbourhoods and international airport are in different locations: Hosea Kutako is around 45 km east of the city. A first night here gives you time to rest, get familiar with your vehicle and find your rhythm.
How to experience it.
Give the capital time of its own, allowing for your flight schedule. Explore the centre, visit a museum and try a local restaurant; a guided walk can help you understand the city's history. Leave enough time to collect your vehicle, buy supplies and attend your briefing.

In the field.
A church, a museum, a street full of life: the capital can be understood by taking multiple points of view together.

A church within a larger story
Consecrated in 1910, the Christuskirche is a landmark of central Windhoek. Its architecture reflects part of the German colonial period. Explore it alongside nearby monuments and institutions to see more than a European postcard in Africa.

Namibia tells the story of its independence
The Independence Memorial Museum adds the history of the liberation struggle to the itinerary. The visit to the centre gains depth if you also listen to contemporary Namibian voices. Opening times, accessibility and sections that can be visited must be checked for the chosen day.

The journey begins before the first dirt road
Allow for the drive from Hosea Kutako to Windhoek as well as immigration, baggage collection and vehicle handover. A first night in the city lets you set off better rested. Your landing time is not the starting time for a long drive.

A rewarding visit starts with the practical details.
- When to go
- Windhoek can be part of a trip in any season. Pack a warm layer for winter mornings and evenings; during the rainy season, leave room for changes to your plans.
- How long to allow
- One night is a sensible starting point for arrival or departure. Add time for museums, a guided visit or a more relaxed beginning, with your flights setting the schedule.
- Airports and transfers
- Hosea Kutako (WDH) serves international flights; Eros (ERS) is a separate airport. Check the airport on each ticket and book the appropriate transfer.
- Getting around
- Plan the central sights together and arrange transfers between neighbourhoods through your accommodation or a guide. In the evening, use prearranged transport.
- What to bring
- Bring comfortable shoes, a hat, water and an extra layer for the evening. Keep the documents for your vehicle handover handy.
- Before setting off again
- Check your vehicle's equipment, luggage, fuel and the time needed for the next leg. A thorough briefing is worth more than a few kilometres gained in a hurry.
